Trustee Recruitment
I was commissioned to deliver a project to increase the capacity of voluntary and community groups in West Yorkshire to find and retain trustees and management committee members. The work started with research into local and national recruitment and training initiatives and resources and had several practical results.
- A series of workshops and presentations to introduce the Trustee Recruitment Toolkit produced by the Governance Hub and encourage people to think about joining a management committee
- Additional resources to help voluntary and community groups use the toolkit e.g. skills audits, adverts and checklists
- Action Research, hands on support to help 5 community groups in Kirklees to recruit new trustees
- An information leaflet explaining what is involved in being on a management committee and encouraging people to find out more with local case studies
- A 'Top Tips' publication with lots of ideas from local groups on how to find and recruit new trustees
As a result of this work I have a lot of resources, case studies and examples of good practice that can be used to help organisations to review their committees and recruit new members.
“Sue's work more than met the brief that was agreed and exceeded our expectations. She came back with fresh ideas - continually re-evaluated the original brief in the light of experience. We now have some useful materials and resources and actual groups have new trustees.”

Organisational development for community groups
I have carried out several short targeted pieces of work as part of VAK's ongoing support programme for local groups. These have had some very practical results.
Suga Brown is an organisation providing dance activities for young people in Kirklees.
I was able to help them review their monitoring and develo more effective systems.
“The impact has been major as all staff have a better understanding of monitoring and evaluation. I was able to use the training sessions and materials to train a new monitoring and evaluation officer. Sue also helped us to make a successful application to Connexions for funding for this post.”
Deborah Brown, Manager
Branches is a day centre for people with learning disabilities in Dewsbury.
Through managerial coaching and planning sessions I was able to help them to develop their activity programme and improve team working.
Mediation Yorkshire works through volunteers to resolve disputes in neighbourhoods, schools and workplaces.
Following review and planning sessions with the manager, staff and trustees they were able to make several improvements to working practices.
“I certainly felt more confident about us moving forward. As a result we now all have workplans and a system of supervision is about to be put in place to monitor and drive them home.”
